A picture says everything that Phil Mickelson won the Masters in a dramatic style. During his final round of golf on Sunday, shot 67 free base, is not an easy task for any golfer. Last year I wrote about my disappointment in a major golf tournament as golf's greatest players have never been able to close the deal during the final round. If this tournament is any indication of what has come this season I think we May be the best year in competitive golf that we've seen in a long time.
the last time I remember watching the Masters as exciting as this one would be in 1986 when my golf idol, Jack Nicklaus, the greatest golfer who ever lived, gathered on the back nine holes on Sunday to win the age of 46 . Fred Couples, a fan favorite, and Tom Watson the other day legend has made an excellent showing at the age of 50 and 60 respectively. Although Tom Watson stumbled after the first round he played well enough to make the cut, which is itself a success at his age. Fred Couples at the age of 50 and past Masters champion since 1992, now dominates the Senior Tour. Fred Couples led the field after the first round and played better than most of his peers finishing alone in sixth place at -9, just two shots back of Tiger Woods and KJ Choi. Tiger and KJ Choi were paired together, shot the same score for each of the four rounds and finished at -11, tied for fourth place. When Tiger Woods was interviewed on camera, he expressed his disappointment in his performance and his goal was to win the tournament and his competitive nature will not allow him to settle for anything less.
I was a fan of Tiger Woods since he made his first appearance on the PGA Tour in 1997. Despite the incident involving his car accident last Thanksgiving, and the revelation of his dalliances and indiscretions are made public, was well accepted by their peers, the media and its golf fans. Although he put on a smile for his fans and the camera makes it far in this tournament and justifiably so in some respects. There is no doubt that Tiger Woods is an incredible golfer, as I know nobody else who could have performed so well after his four months break from golf and his personal life literally turned upside down since last November. There was, however, something missing in his game for what it is incredible how he played he could have achieved better results. He made some mental mistakes down the stretch like taking two foot par putt for granted, is missing and to settle for a bogie, when in contention for possible second or third place finish as opposed to its normal performance when competition heats.
Phil Mickelson, on the other hand, played like a man on a mission and took home the green jacket for himself, his wife Amy, his mom and his children. His golf game has shown the skills that make him the greatest player on tour at the present time, golf, perhaps second only to Tiger Woods. I say maybe, because I think the incident with Tiger it is exposed to the world as a mere mortal that he, not some superman who believes that he was before the incident last year. Phil is a spectacular player who comes into their own, eventually believe in yourself. Unfortunately, it May have to take a family crisis to make it happen. His wife, Amy bravely made her way to a tournament with her children to her husband's side despite the illness, not feeling well. She wanted to participate in this historic moment, while playing an important role inspiring Phil win his third green jacket. He now shares the honor with some of the most famous names in golf, Jimmy Demaret, Nick Faldo, Gary Player and Sam Snead. Arnold Palmer, another golf legend has four victories by Tiger Woods. Jack Nicklaus leads with a whopping six wins at this prestigious golf tournament, the Masters. I thoroughly enjoyed this years Masters and I look forward to seeing Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and other great players on tour, hitting golf balls and compete in the rest of major in 2010. Happy Golf for all!
